Court Request Filed to Move Archbishop Sheen

archbishopfultonsheen.com

The family of Archbishop Fulton Sheen is petitioning the New York Supreme Court for the right to move his body to Peoria. The Venerable Archbishop is currently entombed in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

The petition says the family believes it is only fitting that his remains be transferred to St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria, where he would rest in a marble crypt at the side altar.

Sheen, who is a Peoria native, grew up in St. Mary’s Cathedral, where he took his first Holy Communion and was also ordained.

Filing the family generate petition with New York Supreme Court is the latest effort to bring Sheen's remains to his hometown as his final resting place.

If the court approves the request to transfer of the Archbishop’s remains, it would be handled by Campbell Funeral Home in New York. Campbell handled Sheen’s remains at the time of his death in 1979.

A statement from the Peoria Diocese says Bishop Jenky looks forward to continuing Sheen’s Cause for Beatification upon his return. The Bishop says with the progress the Cause has made, beatification could be celebrated shortly after the arrival of the remains, pending the approval of Pope Francis.
