The City of Canton is feeling the effects of the state budget impasse. City officials say the state owes more than $600,000 in unpaid water bills at Illinois River Correctional Center.

Rep. Mike Unes (R-East Peoria) says he made an emergency call to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner over the weekend.

Unes called the situation “unacceptable.”  Unes says the City could expect to receive an initial $100,000 this week. Discussions on future payments are ongoing.

Unes says the payment is "a  start," but Canton officials are discussing options like suspending services at the prison, imposing late fees on the State, and taking out a loan to keep the facility operational.
