District 150 board forges ahead on search for superintendent

Peoria School District 150 board members could begin interviewing candidates for a superintendent as soon as February.

A consultant from the Illinois Association of School Boards presented initial survey findings during Monday night’s board meeting.

IASB’s Thomas Leahy says 990 people in the district responded to an online survey outlining qualities they’d like to see in the superintendent selection.

Leahy says the board, staff and community overwhelmingly want someone who’s described as “fair, encouraging and ethical” and must be required to live in the district. He says this description would be included in the vacancy announcement to be posted by the end of the week.

The deadline to apply is January 11th.

The search is for a replacement for former Superintendent GranitaLathan who resigned in June. Lathan’s tenure was punctuated by tensions with the teacher’s union, who claimed she fostered a culture of ‘fear and intimidation.’

Interim Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat is applying for the permanent position. Civic and business groups have championed Kherat for her willingness to collaborative and her experience in the district.
