City Council Looks At Debt Service Extension For Road Funding

The Peoria City Council wants to explore ways to put more money toward road maintenance.

Most council members want to look closer at a property tax increase to insure more money for roads next year. City Manager Patrick Urich says it’s a ‘do it now or lose the option’ scenario based on the idea the state could implement a property tax freeze for 2017:

“In order to protect our ability to do so in the future. Because if they impose the property tax cap law on us, we will not be able to, if we don’t have that in place.”

Urich says the city would have $2 million more for roads if a property tax freeze is not approved. The Council also overwhelmingly rejected exploring a motor vehicle license to raise more money for roads.
