Downtown Advisory Group Gets Updates On Ice Rink, Loft Project

More than 120 tons of sand will be needed to create the Peoria Civic Center’s new ice skating rink.  The project is part of the Center’s inaugural Winterfest.  Civic Center Interim General Manager Anne Clayton says the rink will also help fill a nearly $700,000 spending gap for the Center this fiscal year:

“We are hoping to generate revenues towards our bottom line. As you know it’s been tough the past few years. So this was a thing to look outside the box and to generate additional revenues to cut or deficit.”

Clayton says the rink will also feature an ice-slide and opens the Friday after Thanksgiving.  She says the goal is to draw more people to the downtown during the winter, which usually sees less foot-traffic.

Building Update

The Persimmon Lofts project is set to open in the Warehouse District next summer.  The Peoria Downtown Advisory Commission got an update on the four-story building project Wednesday.  Commission chair Mark Misselhorn says the studio and one-bedroom apartments will mesh well with recent road upgrades on Washington and Adams streets:

“Those improvements to the streetscaping to the quality and place have stopped there for now, and so it’s a southern anchor.”

The developer wants the loft building to reach full occupancy by next fall.
