Peoria group talks stormwater utility fee possibilities

Peoria Public Radio / Tanya Koonce

Peoria’s group that was formed to reduce storm-water runoff looked at several possible fee rates to charge residents.

The OneWater Committee says a utility fee would help pay for upgrades to infrastructure that handles runoff.  City Engineer Scott Reeise says a possible fee would charge residents based on how much of their property can’t absorb rainfall:

“There’s a direct correlation with your lot or your property, if you have a large amount of impervious area, you have more water shedding off and going into the right-of-way.”

Reeise says the residential fee could range from $9 to $13 per month. He says the committee is still narrowing down possible prices and credits to help homeowners reduce the amount they would pay.  The Peoria City Council would need to sign off on any final proposal from the group.
