Opponents of proposed apartment complex want City Council to weigh-in

Residents opposing the proposed River Trail Apartments in Peoria are posing specific questions to the city.  They say they want more financial if information from the developer to prevent the possibility of last-minute public loans.  David Pittman is with the Save Riverfront Park group opposing the proposed 143-unit complex on city-owned property.  He says they also want the city to give District 150 special tax-increment-financing funds if the project goes through:

“Peoria Heights does this routinely, East Peoria has done this in the past. We think that now is the time for this project to show that it really wants to be part of the community.”

Pittman says other questions include wanting the City to use its own Comprehensive Plan to evaluate the project, and possibly eliminating a roadway extension if the project becomes a reality.  City staff say they were unaware of the questions, and the City Council should first address any issues raised about the project.  Pittman says the group also wants the city to provide a comparable land-swap near the Illinois River if the project is approved.  The City Zoning Commission takes up the proposal at its meeting next week.
