Local police are reminding drivers to be cautious at intersections. The warning comes after a crash where a driver went through a flashing yellow arrow without yielding to oncoming traffic.
The passenger, his wife, was killed.
The flashing yellow arrow means drivers may proceed only after oncoming and pedestrian traffic is clear. That’s why police Lt. Steve Roegge says drivers need to remain on the alert.
“I think people just need to be aware. The flashing yellow lights are no different than not having an arrow," Roegge said. "The idea behind it is you still have to be cautionary."
The signal is only used in a few Illinois cities, including Peoria. The city started installing more last year to improve efficiency at intersections by allowing more left turns.
