District 150 Board OKs Lathan’s separation agreement

The District 150 School Board unanimously signed-off on a separation agreement with Superintendent Grenita Lathan last night.

The agreement says Lathan’s resignation officially takes effect August 7th.  Lathan plans to use vacation time between now and then.  The District will also pay Lathan $55,000 for previously accrued vacation time that she earned, but did not yet use.  Officials say that's in-line with any employee who leaves the district with unused vacation.  District 150 attorney Rick Rettberg says the agreement is a good deal for the district because it avoids  original contract language that allowed for another payment:

“Had she done nothing and had if the board had terminated her under the provisions of her agreement, she would have been entitled to $100,000 and she has chosen to waive that payment.”

That means, if the board terminated Lathan, she could have collected $100,000 in addition to the more than $55,000 in accrued vacation time.

Lathan announced her resignation this week, following days of heightened tensions among her supporters and detractors.  The School Board will meet Monday to select an acting superintendent.
