Uber can now operate in the City of Peoria. The measure was approved by the City Council, and follows months of deferrals:
The city crafted language that would be agreeable for both established taxi companies and Uber officials. The measure allows taxi companies to change the price of some rides instead of just using the meter. It also lets taxi companies use more kinds of insurance options. Peoria City Attorney Don Leist recalled the months of negotiations:
“Passionate, originally, and it should be. But the taxi companies and Uber were professional.”
Leist says it’s not clear exactly when Uber could start operating in the city. But he says the new ordinance helps level the playing field between both kinds of transportation companies.
