Math and science teachers getting in-depth summer courses

A three-year grant will pay for in-depth science and math training for more than 100 regional school teachers this summer.

The State Board of Education awarded one-and-a-half-million-dollars to pay for 10-days of training at Bradley University for kindergarten through high school teachers.

Beth Derry is the Superintendent of the Regional office of Education. She says the grant has a direct impact on improving math and science classes:

“How do you get to students. Do you build capacity in the adults or do you build capacity in the teachers that will be working with those students everyday? You've got to get to that level."

Derry says the teachers will use resources at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and the Peoria EDC to make math and science classes more interesting. She says teachers can register for the July courses online.
