App could ease need for change for parking in Peoria

Peoria invites you to park by app.  The city plans to test a program this summer for motorists to use a mobile application to cover the cost of certain parking meters.

The app can be downloaded to smartphones. But payments can also be made through other phones, laptops or desktop computers.

A user would enter their license number and a meter code in the free app and pay the charge to their credit card.  The meter even texts users when meter expiration is imminent.

Not techno-savvy?  Not to worry. The smart-meters will still accept coins.

Public Works Director Mike Rogers is negotiating a contract for the app with North Carolina-based Passport Parking.  The company has similar operations in Urbana-Champaign and Chicago.
