Peoria's Center for Prevention of Abuse is calling for an end of violence against women and children. Peoria Public Radio Alex Rusciano reports it's part of an annual global event called 'One Billion Rising':
The event features people dancing around the world to highlight violence or abuse against women and girls, including dancing at the Center for Prevention of Abuse.
Center Director Martha Herm says the world wide program is a positive, low-stress way to draw attention to abuse:
“I think that’s just because women and men are feeling empowered to stand up for this issue. Finally. You know, it’s been kind of hidden for years.”
Bartonville grade school students also read prose pieces to support the event. They are part of the Center's "Hearts" program that encourages young people to talk about abuse.
