Peoria County hopes to start building new war memorial this year

Fundraising is nearly finished for a new war memorial in Peoria that will feature statues of soldiers on patrol. It will honor those killed in conflicts from the Korean war to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Two granite plaques on either side of a paved V-shaped plaza will be engraved with names of the dead.
Peoria County Clerk Steve Sonnemaker says about three-fourths of the $407,000 price tag has been raised. He says construction could start this year.
The memorial will be located in the Peoria County Courthouse Plaza.
Several statues of soldiers on patrol will be placed in a grassy area. Each will be designed with a uniform and equipment from the different wars.
