The Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center is testing new technology that could help doctors better monitor patients with chronic diseases.

A clinical research pilot is underway, testing at-home sensors developed by Intel-GE Care Innovations. The sensors are set up all around a patient’s home, tracking everyday activities as well as vitals like weight and lung capacity. Jessica Short is the Lead Simulation Research Coordinator at Jump.

“Most of this equipment allows us to get information from the patients that we wouldn’t normally get until they get to the clinic or hospital.”

The project is first monitoring those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. Pulmonologist Dr. Bill Tillis says the goal of the study is to find better ways to care for those with chronic diseases at home.
“We feel that if we can identify patients at the very early signs of any problems that are developing and treat them in the home will prevent them from getting to the point where they have to come to the hospital.”

The pilot study that includes up to 30 patients continues through March. Then Jump will conduct a larger study with up to 200 people.
