East Peoria approves $2.5M street maintenance program

The East Peoria City Council approved a $2.5 million street maintenance program for next year.

The street program is more than double the maintenance funding in East Peoria compared to recent years. City Commissioner Dan Decker says spending more money now means better long-term upkeep of street conditions:

“We’re going to make those streets that need repair immediately; we’re going to fix those. But we’re going to try to make the streets that are still workable last a lot longer.”

East Peoria commissioners also continue to debate whether to keep using an external engineer for infrastructure projects, or to train city staff to instead do the job.

In other business, the city received a state grant to re-build a structure destroyed by last year’s tornado that will free-up overall storage space for the city’s wastewater and public works equipment.
