East Peoria Fire Department encouraging residents to check their carbon monoxide alarms

Peoria Public Radio

The East Peoria Fire Department is taking part in the National Beat the Beep Campaign.

The goal is to alert residents that their carbon monoxide alarms may be at the end of their lifecycles. The alarm’s life expectancy is five to seven years.

Illinois state law requires that residents have at least one carbon monoxide alarm within fifteen feet of every bedroom.

It’s been seven years since the law passed, and many alarms are now reaching the end of their lifecycle and need to be replaced.

One sign that a carbon monoxide alarm needs to be replaced is a beeping or chirping sound.
