Ameren warns of phone scam

Ameren Illinois is warning Washington residents of a telephone scam targeting the area.

Company officials say those living in the city and surrounding communities have received calls threatening to shut off their power unless immediate payments are made. Victims are then directed to use a so-called “Green Dot Card” or other prepaid debit card to make the payments.

Ameren officials say the company does not demand immediate payments. Anyone with questions regarding their accounts should contact Ameren.
