A long-time former 17th District Congressman has died after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease. 63-year old Lane Evans died Wednesday at a nursing home in East Moline, according to his legal guardian.
Evans was first elected as Congressman in 1982 and served for more than 20 years in the position. He announced he wouldn’t seek re-election in 2006 due to his declining health.
The former Marine and Vietnam War-era veteran fought for the rights of veterans, including pushing legislation to help those exposed to Agent Orange.
A statement from current 17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos says Evans represented everything that is right about public service. She says he was a champion for the region in the halls of Congress and a strong advocate for veterans and working families across the country.
A visitation will be held this Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 pm at Esterdahl Mortuary in Moline.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church in Moline.
Congressman Evans will be buried at the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island.
