Washington Fire Chief resigns

Washington’s Fire Chief is stepping down from the position. Mike Vaughn announced his resignation last night. This comes after months of negotiations for a new contract with the independent fire board that manages the fire department.

The board initially voted to let Vaughn’s contract expire at the end of July. That led to protests from supporters, and the resignation of one board member. Two other board members left after staying on months after their terms expired.

The board has been working on a new contract with Vaughn since then. His original contract was extended through the end of this month.

In a statement, Vaughn says he believes the board had no intention of reaching a fair agreement. The Washington Fire Department’s first full-time fire chief’s resignation is effective November 1st.
