Illinois American Water and the City of Peoria have suspended talks to extend a five-year-purchase option to 20 years. The previous franchise agreement proposal would have given the city more than a million dollars a year for a residential streets overlay program and another $1.4 million for work permit fees. The water company would have in turn passed on the cost to ratepayers with a three percent increase. The City and the water company issued a joint statement that gave no explanation as to why the negotiations were halted. The statement does say the talks reached an impasse.
