The Washington High School Football Team is the focus of a Weather Channel feature report. The story is called “A Rallying Cry: One Team, One Town.”
It looks back at how the football team helped the community recover after last fall’s devastating tornado. Specifically, it’s about the team playing in the State Semi-Finals last year.
Herb Knoblauch is the Washington Community High School Athletic Director. He says the football team, in many ways, helped heal the town immediately after the November 17th tornado.
“The football team at that time was a bit of normalcy seven days afterwards. I think that’s what the big rally around it was. They could go and be normal for one day underneath the sunny day in the fall. And maybe forget for a couple of hours," Knoblauch says.
Much of the tornado-stricken town was able to go watch the team play in Springfield thanks to a charter bus donation.
Many Washington residents had lost their homes as well as their cars in the tornado, and had many more residents were still without utilities the day of the game.
