Peoria offers bonus support for Medical Cannabis facility applicants

Those interested in siting a medical marijuana dispensary or cultivation center in Peoria can be considered for a letter of support.

Applicants are required to meet state and city specifications as well as provide a community wellness plan to get the city-issued letter. The Peoria City Council approved offering the letters of support on a six to five vote. Peoria City Staff is reviewing the detailed applications for approval.

Chris Setti is the Assistant Peoria City Manager. He says the letters offer ‘bonus points’ in the state application process.“So if the city is to be competitive in having either a cultivation operation and/or a dispensary operation it would seem to be in our interest to issue a letter of support, because we know that there will one cultivation center somewhere in Illinois State Patrol District 8," he says.

It’s also anticipated as many as two dispensaries could be permitted in the district. The applications are due to the state September 22nd.

It's not clear how many applicants might move forward from Peoria. The East Peoria City Council takes up three application requests next week. Pekin has already approved an application for a cultivation center on route 29 across from the federal prison.
