Local fundraiser donates $45,000 for breast cancer screenings

A local fundraising event is continuing to help more women get screened for breast cancer.

Organizers of the Bikers for Ta-Tas Ride Against Breast Cancer event announced they’ve raised 45-thousand dollars for the UnityPoint Health-Methodist/Proctor Foundation. The money supplements a grant from the Komen Foundation for breast cancer screening services and treatment.

Nancy Borum founded the ride and also works for the Methodist-Proctor Foundation. She says she lost her grandmother and aunt to breast cancer. Her mother and sister are survivors of the disease.

“I was hearing more and more of friends that were getting diagnosed with breast cancer and I knew of people that weren’t getting screenings because they couldn’t afford it. So I knew that we needed to have the money and we needed to educate. We need to educate people to go get their screenings even though they can’t afford it or don’t have insurance."

Last year’s event paid for 140 mammograms as well as care packages for those who’ve had mastectomies. This is the seventh year for the Bikers for Ta Tas fundraising event. It’s raised 149-thousand dollars since its inception.
