Allegiant Air will begin offering a new destination at the Peoria International Airport beginning this fall. The airline announced Tuesday non-stop service to the Orlando Sanford International Airport. Service begins November 14th. Airport Director Gene Olson says the Central Florida destination was in high demand locally:
“People request it, saying they really want to go on Orlando flights. It’s something we’ve been working on with Allegiant couple of years. We’re finally able to get them to understand the marketplace...that is was a viable opportunity.”
Olson says Allegiant already offers service from the Peoria airport Phoenix-Mesa, Las Vegas, Punta Gorda and St. Petersburg. He says the service is also helping fill the gap when AirTran Airways left the Bloomington airport three years ago. Olson says the Peoria International Airport is also applying for a federal grant through the Department of Transportation. He says the funding, if successful, would help add direct flights from Peoria to Philadelphia, Houston, and Charlotte.
