New online community generates transportation ideas

The Tri-County Regional Planning commission has made it easier for the public to weigh-in on transportation issues.
The commission’s long range transportation plan, known as Envision HOI, is using the online community tool called ‘MindMixer’ to collect feedback from area residents.

Kathryn Shackelford is a planner with the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission. She says the new technology lets staff know what transportation issues are most important to area residents.

“If you are familiar with a place or an area on the map where you see concern, zoom in to that site, and a little bubble will appear and it says submit your idea to the map. And it gives the address. It says what’s your idea. So you click on the button, title your idea, whatever the issue might be. Maybe it’s you need to add a crosswalk here, or this intersection is too dangerous. And then you have a paragraph to describe what your idea’s about.”

Shackelford says the resident feedback can help staff narrow down priorities for the region in the next 25 years. Residents can submit photos and videos on the site and share them with social media.
