A well-known Illinois Democratic official died in Springfield last night.
Gene Callan worked as a newspaper reporter and also served as a longtime aide to top Democratic elected officials, including the late U.S. Senator Alan Dixon. He was 80-years-old, and also served as press secretary for former U.S. Senator Paul Simon while he was lieutenant governor.
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is Callahan’s daughter. She says an event to celebrate Callahan's life is planned in Springfield on Friday.
Senator Dick Durbin called Callahan a "trusted friend". He also worked as a lobbyist for Major League Baseball.
