Construction on new Children's Museum underway

Denise Molina-Weiger

The effort to create a Children’s Museum in Glen Oak Park is moving closer to completion.

Officials with the ‘Power of Play’ campaign ceremoniously took hammers and knocked holes in the walls of the Glen Oak Park Pavilion to make way for the facility.

Colleen DiGiallonardo is the President of the Junior League of Peoria, one of the partners working to create the museum. She says the facility will feature six interactive galleries that reflect the Peoria region, and help meet the developmental needs of children up to eight years old.

“These positive experiences will instill in our children a lifelong love of learning and encourage an appreciation of museums as they mature. It will be an educational resource for teachers and for parents. All of the exhibits in the Peoria Playhouse are accessible to children with special needs, and every component included within is tied to an early learning standard from the state of Illinois.”

The effort to build a Children’s Museum began more than ten years ago. Nearly six million dollars has been raised for the project.

Construction is expected to finish by next June.
