The Peoria Housing Authority has a plan to makeover the former Greeley School site into affordable housing.
The plan for around forty units is on the agenda for approval at Tuesday night's City Council Meeting. The apartment project is part of an effort to replace Taft Homes. It has already been presented to and approved by the zoning commission.
Ken Zika is the Chairman of the Peoria Housing Authority Board. He says the facade of the former Greeley school will be preserved and reflected in newly constructed buildings on the site. About twenty apartments will make up the former school building. Two new three-story buildings will hold the other units.
“Our goal is to have people that live there that are attending school, and if they have children their children can go to school right there. And that’s the focus of that property, what we plan to do there.”
Designs for the site include having a head start school on the property.
