Peoria police are investigating an inappropriate sexual relationship between a District 150 teacher and student that apparently went on for about five years.
Police say Roosevelt Magnet band teacher Maury Beelman was arrested for criminal sexual assault following an investigation. The matter was brought to the attention of District 150 officials after the student disclosed the relationship to another teacher at Peoria High School. Administration then notified Peoria Police.
The relationship apparently began when the student was in eighth grade and continued through high school. Beelman and the student confirmed their relationship during police interviews.
A statement from District 150 Superintendent Granita Lathan says the district takes the accusations seriously and will continue to cooperate with police in the investigation.
