District 150 re-hires 39 pink-slipped teachers

The Peoria District 150 School Board voted to recall 39 pink-slipped teachers. Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports they were part of the board’s reduction in force last month:
The re-hires come from the 66 teachers pink-slipped for honorable dismissal. Superintendent Grenita Lathan says this is the first time in recent memory that the district is recalling some teachers before the end of the academic year.

“We’ve looked at enrollment, we’ve looked at registration as far as courses at the high school level. And between our central office administrators, human resources and our principals, we made a concerted effort to try to get people back as soon as possible, so we could prepare and train staff over the summer that needed to be trained,” Lathan says.

Lathan says the district might bring back additional teachers this summer when they have more enrollment information. In other business, the School Board voted to end its usual monthly Committee of the Whole meeting structure. The Board decided it’s more consistent and productive to have two regular board meetings a month and schedule committee of the whole meetings as needed.
