Peoria animal control officers investigate over four hundred animal bites each year. Many bite cases are serious, involve children and the dog may even be the family pet. Peoria County Animal Prevention Services is encouraging responsible pet ownership, and raising awareness of the risk of dog attacks and basic safety tips.
Owners are encouraged to train and socialize their dog around strangers, and keep their pets supervised and restrained on their property at all times. Owners should also make sure the dog is spayed or neutered and has current rabies vaccination.
National Dog Bite prevention week runs through Friday. The Peoria Humane Society is offering animal safety presentations as well as tips for preventing dog bites and how to respond to a dog attack. Those wanting to schedule a safety presentation can contact Peoria county Animal Protection Services.
