Workers Memorial Day in Peoria

Central Illinois labor groups did the 25th annual Workers Memorial Day rally at the Labor Temple Monday. The rally usually starts with a march from the Labor Temple to the Workers Memorial Monument at city hall where the event takes place. Mike Everett is the President of the West Central Illinois Labor Council.

He says, in the face of the storm that swept across the area, they figured it would be in bad taste to endanger the workers particularly on the day on they are raising awareness against dangerous workplace practices. “The reason we’re here and for the last 25 years this council has been remembering this day is because this is something that requires constant attention. We have to be continually dissatisfied that any worker goes to work and doesn’t go home.”

Everett says the annual Workers Memorial Day event will be necessary until people value life more than profit.
