The City of Peoria has used more than 10,000 tons of salt so far this winter season. City Streets manager David Haste says there’s enough salt to last through the rest of the season. But he says his staff are trying to make the salt go further:
“We’re mixing our material with salt and slag, we’re trying to get the same effect as full-strength salt by using liquid products like brine and calcium-chloride. We spray that liquid at the spinner and use the sand and the slag as a transfer agent to get it to the pavement,” Haste says.
Haste says an ice storm or long-term freeze could use up more salt that expected. But he says crews are also trying to salt more on hills and plow more on straight roads to help conserve resources. He says 26 trucks were operating on 18 routes during the snow Monday.
