The Peoria Police Department is hiring seven new officers. The new hires all have prior police service and have already completed the Illinois Police Training Institute. That means most of the seven will make it to the street for active service in June, just before the peak of Summer.
They are filling a portion of the current department vacancies. That leaves the Peoria Police Department with 11 total positions still to fill. Five are existing positions Peoria Police Officers will continue to make-up for with overtime. Six are new positions created by a federal Department of Justice Grant match.
The new officers are all male and the bulk are coming from Bradley University and District 150 Police Departments. Assistant Police Chief Jerry Mitchell says it’s a wise investment because all will have policing familiarity with the community they will serve.
The formal induction ceremony for the new officers is at one o’clock February 11th at City Hall.
