2013 was one of the worst seasons in Chicago baseball history, but fans now have reason to celebrate. Pitcher and former Cub Greg Maddux and longtime White Sox slugger Frank Thomas were both elected Wednesday to Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame, along with pitcher Tom Glavine, Maddux’s teammate with the Atlanta Braves.
Before Maddux made the majors at age 20, he pitched for the Cubs’ minor league affiliate in Peoria in 1985. But Peoria Chiefs team president Rocky Vonachensays he knew Maddux wouldn’t stay there long. He talked with Illinois Public Radio's Jeff Bossert:
Vonachen is the son of former Chiefs owner Pete Vonachen, who passed away last June. Maddux will join baseball’s elite in a ceremony in Cooperstown July 27, along with Frank Thomas and Tom Glavine, and former managers Tony LaRussa, Bobby Cox, and Joe Torre.
