As November 17th tornado victims continue putting their lives back together, some area agencies are hoping to make sure their mental health needs are met. The Children’s Home Association of Illinois, Human Service Center, OSF HealthCare, Tazwood Center for Wellness, and the United Way are hosting a free presentation called, “Understanding the Effects of Trauma and PTSD Following a Natural Disaster.”
The event is targeting parents, first responders, teachers, clergy and anyone who may come into contact with those struggling with the effects of PTSD. It aims to educate people on the disorder, including how to recognize symptoms and how to help in recovery.
Clete Winkelmann is the President and CEO of the Children’s Home. He says symptoms of PTSD may not present themselves until three months following a traumatic event.
“We’re also very concerned that after the thaw and the spring storms start rolling in and the tornado sirens start to blare again, the effects that it’s going to have on people. So, we want to get out there with the information about what this is. What are they experiencing, (and) how can you begin to take care of it whether it’s your child or yourself?”
The free presentation on PTSD is Saturday from nine until noon at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington. A resource fair will also be set up for anyone wanting additional information. Childcare can also be arranged by calling the church at 309-444-2381..
