Weather condition may slow progress on the recovery efforts in Washington. Peoria Public Radio's Alex Rusciano has an update on the latest recovery and cleanup efforts following Sunday's tornado:
East Peoria’s Damage assessment indicates 40 homes will need to be demolished. Mayor Dave Mingus says hundreds more homes sustained some level of damage. He says areas including Pinecrest Drive, Muller, and Springfield Roads were hardest hit. Still Mingus says most people are getting back into their homes with the exception of the 40 with too much structural damage.
Mingus: “Right now to the best of my knowledge we had one family who did not have a place to go. We’ve been very fortunate in our community family and friends, close knit have taken people in. We also have knowledge that some insurance companies have already been on the scene and have provided accommodations to those in need. So we’ve been very fortunate as far as people having a place to go.”
Mingus says East Peoria officials also anticipate the rain and cold temperatures forecast will put a damper on their residents efforts to recover personal possessions. The tornado that struck Washington Sunday, started in East Peoria.
