Peoria crews deep-cleaning Southern Gateway streets

Peoria Public Works and code enforcement crews are giving the city’s southern corridor a makeover.  Nearly 40 workers are conducting code sweeps on Adams, Jefferson and Washington Streets between Interstates 74 and 474. Ross Black is the City’s Community Development Director. He says crews are cleaning the roads from sidewalk to sidewalk:

“If you drive through this area, what you see are sidewalks that have been opened up again that were overgrown for several years, old fences torn down, weeds and litter in the gutters are being removed.  And on the private properties, you’ll hopefully see owners maintaining their properties after getting warning notices,” Black says.

Black says code violators are also citing residents for tall grass, illegal dumping and unsafe structures. It’s the first deep-cleaning of its kind in several years.  Black says the streets were targeted because they’re the main arteries into Peoria from the airport and provide a first impression of the city. He says crews should finish the sweep by next week and will maintain it as neede
