A local recreation center is celebrating 100 years of service in Peoria. The Park District and members of the Proctor Recreation Center buried a time capsule Friday as part of celebrations to honor the anniversary. The capsule contains historic pictures and other memories of the facility. It's to be dug up in 50 years.
Bonnie Noble is the Executive Director of the Park District. Noble says more than one-million dollars has been pumped into the historic center over the last five years for renovations. But she says maintaining the facility and it programs is crucial for the south side.
“It’s a safe haven. People feel safe when they come here, and that in itself for this neighborhood and at this particular time, is one of the most important things that we can do.”
Noble says the Proctor Center has continued to offer a diversity of programs and activities for children and adults over the years. They include nutritional and life skills classes, sports programs and holiday parties. The Centennial celebration of Proctor continues with events through December.
