District 150 weighs options on Peoria Stadium

The future of the Peoria Stadium property remains murky. Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports District 150 is considering multiple options:

The District could sell some or all of the stadium property and focus on revamping the football field, track and other sports areas at Manual and Peoria High Schools. That could cost more than $4 million. District Treasurer Dave Kinney that option would mean using money from any stadium sale towards the high school upgrades:

“The declining use of the stadium, it does make sense to look at the sale of it as a potential revenue to help cover that.  If we were to just do the stadium, then we would need to find money in the budget, or look for corporate sponsors or something,” Kinney says.

Kinney says no final decisions have been made.  High school athletic directors also say on-site upgrades would mean more efficient practices. The district could also do nothing, or use Richwoods high school for all three football teams. Kinney says another option involves upgrading the stadium itself. That could cost up to $3 million. The District could also use money from a County-wide one-percent sales tax increase if voter approve it in spring elections. The School Board also approved selling the Peoria Alternative School building up for auction in the coming months.
