Rabid bat identified in Peoria County

The Peoria City/County Health Department says it’s identified a rabid bat in the county. This comes as the department and Peoria County Animal Protection Services is about to observe World Rabies Day on September 28th.

The viral disease affects the central nervous system of humans and other mammals. It’s often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal.

The health department says some safety tips residents can follow to avoid getting the disease include avoiding contact with wild or unfamiliar animals, making sure pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations, and checking buildings for small openings where bats may be able to enter.

More information is available by contacting the health department or PCAPS.
