Peoria Zoo tiger dies of fungal infection

Last week’s death of a female tiger at the Peoria Zoo was caused by a fungal infection. That’s according to necropsy results that were finalized this week. 

Zoo officials say Kyra had blastomycosis. The infection is found in soils throughout the world and is common in the Midwest. Lung infections occur when fungal spores are inhaled. Zoo officials say no other tigers have demonstrated any symptoms and results from routine physicals exams have been normal. The remaining tigers will receive more physical exams in the near futur
