The Marine Monument in Springdale Cemetery will be restored after it fell during a Memorial Day ceremony. The Springdale Cemetery management authority unanimously approved repealing the ban on monument resetting in order to repair the structure. The ban on monument resetting was put in place after it came to light cemetery staff may have been using low-quality restoration techniques. But Management Authority Chair Bob Manning says it raises a broader issue:
“We have tens of thousands of markers in the cemetery, its an old cemetery so many have fallen or tilted and they're leaning. How do we go about resetting that,” Manning says.
Manning says he does not support using taxpayer dollars to cover that cost. He says they are talking with the Springdale Foundation about ways to pay for the service.
Springdale’s search for a new general manager also continues. The authority reportedly has about two dozen applicants. Manning says the search committee is looking to select the top six candidates before the board retreat. That is not yet scheduled, but is anticipated next month.
