Considering the future of Taft Homes

The Peoria Housing Authority is in the middle of two days of meetings evaluating future options for Taft Homes.

The Taft Homes Working Group meet from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. yesterday to brainstorm options. A larger public meeting followed with about 50 people in attendance at the Gateway Building.

Brenda Coates is the executive director of the P.H.A. She says no matter what redevelopment plan they create, Taft homes will look different. “We know for sure it will not be 100 percent public housing. So we’re looking at all options, you know commercial development, market rate. We have a valuable asset that’s located on the riverfront with river views. Could be attractive market rate property I say.”

Coates says the housing authority board meets with officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Development today. She says the goal of that meeting is to look at redevelopment options within the context of HUD regulations. The meeting is from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Peoria Housing Authority office.
