Peoria Stadium topic of City Council Meeting

Name This Peoria Landmark

Peoria District 150 is considering selling its stadium property just off War Memorial Drive to be used for a new Wal-mart Store. Peoria Public Radio’s Tanya Koonce reports that has the concern of many in the city.

District 150 holds the property with the Peoria Park District, and the city would work as the intermediary in such a deal. Last night those who oppose the sale of the stadium property spoke loud and clear at the Peoria City Council meeting.

The property is Peoria’s Third District. City Councilman Tim Riggenbach represents that district. He and his constituents wonder if there are better suited sites for a Super Wal-mart Center. “We have a few suggestion that we’d like you to consider. The Cub Food at Midtown Plaza continues to be raised as a possibility. What about their existing footprint on North University?” Riggenbach said.  “We also just see the land at the corner of War Memorial and University, the old Jim McComb as something.”

Two neighboring homeowners association representatives also spoke against the proposal.

The District 150 is offering to pay the Park District more than $1.1 for it’s interest in the property, and  Walmart has sent a letter regarding its interest in part of the stadium property for the construction and operation of a Walmart Super Center.

The Peoria Park Board also meets at 6:00 Wednesday night at the Gateway Building.
