Kaden Nelms (left), Nancy Proehl and Brad Donley were candidates in this week's Republican primary for seats on the Tazewell County Board in District 1.

Thirteen open seats on the 21-member Tazewell County Board need to be filled this year.

Candidates running for 11 of those seats cleared the first hurdle toward election this week when they won races in the Republican primary and earned spots in the Nov. 3 general election.

There was no Democratic primary for the 13 seats, but there could be Democratic candidates in November.

No Republican candidate ran in the primary for a seat in District 2, or a seat in District 3. The seat in District 3 is for a two-year term, half the normal length.

The lone contested race in the Republican primary was in District 1, where five candidates competed for four seats.

Kim Joesting [1,470 votes], Nancy Proehl [1,383], Brad Donley [1,181] and Kaden Nelms [1,179] were the winners in unofficial returns. Jerald Stewart [964] finished in fifth place.

Joesting, Proehl and Nelms are incumbents.

Ben Ackerman, Nick Graff and Greg Sinn were the winners in District 2. Graff and Sinn are incumbents.

David Mingus, Eugene Glueck, Tammy Rich Stimson and Jason Magarity were the winners in District 3. Mingus and Rich Stimson are incumbents.
