The CEO of the nonprofit Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois is retiring.

Don Johnson became CEO of the Peoria-based organization in 2016, coming from experience with the Heart of Illinois United Way and the Hult Center for Healthy Living.

During Johnson’s tenure, the nonprofit expanded its program offerings beyond their long-running job training and placement programs and donation-based stores. New programs include increased support for children and families at risk of experiencing violence and a just-unveiled job placement program for neurodivergent young adults.

According to a statement from Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois, Johnson also led a capital campaign to expand the General Wayne A. Downing Home for Veterans and raised almost $1.5 million for Goodwill’s Patriot Weekend fundraiser for veterans.

“You don’t retire away from something, you retire to something and my something is in Northern Wisconsin,” said Johnson in a statement.

Johnson’s retirement officially takes effect in August. Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois has not yet named a replacement.

Collin Schopp is the interim news director at WCBU. He joined the station in 2022.
