The Nikki Malley Quartet explores unique genre influences with vibraphone center stage

On this week’s Out and About, Dr. Mae Gilliland of ArtsPartners of Central Illinois is joined by Nikki Malley to discuss the upcoming Central Illinois Jazz Society concert featuring the Nikki Malley Quartet.

Known for their innovative blend of traditional and contemporary jazz, the quartet explores everything from hard bop to unexpected genre influences, creating a fresh and dynamic sound. Nikki shares insights into her approach as both a performer and musicologist, the unique role of the vibraphone in jazz, and what audiences can look forward to at this exciting evening of live music. The concert takes place at Trailside Event Center on Sunday, March 16 at 6 p.m., featuring an opening performance by the ever-popular CIJS House Band led by Larry Harms.

Jody Holtz was WCBU's assistant program and development director. She left the station in 2025.
