A person is dead after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon in Peoria.

Peoria police responded to the crash at 5:45 p.m. in the 3400 block of North University, where they found a 66-year-old man down in the southbound lane, and a damaged wheelchair nearby.

The driver on scene told police he didn't see the victim until it was too late and couldn't avoid hitting him.

The victim was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after. His identity and cause of death will be released by the Peoria County Coroner's Office.

Police made no arrests, and no citations were issued.
